Dr. Gerald Lemole was among the surgeons who performed America’s first heart transplants. Although the procedures were initially successful, each early transplant patient died due to the plaques that formed in their arteries. How had this happened so rapidly to patients with young hearts and good arteries?

“There were these little white streaks in the coronary artery patients,” recalls Dr. Lemole.

“So we biopsied those streaks, and sure enough, they were … scarred up lymphatic vessels that were being blocked through chronic inflammation.”

Dr. Lemole’s search for the answer led him to a missing piece in our understanding of health—the role of the lymphatic system in preventing chronic disease.
