When Dr. Douglas Spiel began rebuilding his health after a severe autoimmune illness, his first concern wasn’t how much he could lift or how often he trained. It was whether his body still had the biological capacity to recover at all.

Timing mattered as much as selection. Some supplements were taken on an empty stomach, others with fat, and others later in the day to support stress regulation and sleep.

“It’s not about taking more,” Spiel said. “It’s about supporting the right systems at the right time.”

Training factored heavily into his recovery. Preserving muscle helped stabilize metabolism, making the broader strategy more effective.
