The Viruses Scientists Fear Most—Ebola, Hantavirus, & H5N1 With ICU Doctor Roger Seheult
Scientists have a shortlist of viruses they watch closely—pathogens with the potential to spread globally if the wrong mutation occurs at the wrong time. At the top of that list is H5N1 bird flu. Not because it is currently spreading between humans, but because of what the scientific community believes would happen if it did.
In a wide-ranging interview on “Vital Signs,” ICU physician and MedCram founder Dr. Roger Seheult explains why H5N1 remains the virus that keeps researchers up at night, what it would take to make the jump to sustained human transmission, why existing flu immunity would offer little protection, and why the scale of animal infections in recent years makes continued vigilance essential.
Dr. Seheult also addresses two outbreaks currently making headlines. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola is spreading in Congo and Uganda, with six Americans initially caught up in the situation. Unlike the better-known Zaire strain, no vaccine or monoclonal antibodies exist for this variant.
Meanwhile, at least three passengers have died following a Hantavirus outbreak on an adventure cruise ship near Argentina—involving the Andes strain, the one variant that has demonstrated human-to-human transmission.
Dr. Seheult has treated Hantavirus firsthand. His assessment of all three situations is measured, evidence-based, and essential viewing.
