Diet Switch: Hormone, Weight Loss, Brain Health Benefits | Bella Ma
Juilliard pianist Bella Ma thought she had the perfect weight-loss diet. When her health crashed, she had no choice but to reverse dietary course.
Bella Ma followed every rule. For six years, the Juilliard-trained pianist ate a whole-foods vegan diet—fresh vegetables, beans, fruit, no processed food. She did everything the clean-eating community recommended, but her body had other plans.
By her sixth year, she had developed chronic eczema, cystic acne, persistent brain fog, and anxiety attacks backstage before performances. Then came the detail that finally forced her hand: She lost her period at 21.
A full blood panel told the story her diet hadn’t. Severe deficiencies in B12, iron, and vitamin D. Her doctor gave her a choice—supplement aggressively, or start eating meat. For a committed vegan, it felt like a verdict.
What followed was one of the more striking dietary reversals you’re likely to hear. Ma switched to a strict carnivore diet overnight—meat, eggs, butter, nothing else. Within three months, her period returned. Within a year, the eczema and acne that had defined her adolescence were gone. No prescription creams. No medication.
Seven years on, Ma joins “Vital Signs” to celebrate her “carnivore gains” from skin health to brain health. The memory lapses that plagued her Juilliard rehearsals are gone. The stage anxiety has lifted, she says.
“Animal foods, protein, fat, cholesterol,” she told host Brendon Fallon. “That’s not what causes disease. There’s just a lot of unlearning to do.”
