Trump: Taiwan Agrees to Buy 30 percent of Gas From Alaska Pipeline; Consumer Prices Rise 0.6 Percent

President Donald Trump told a rally in Alaska on Tuesday that Taiwan agreed to purchase 30 percent of the natural gas produced by a pipeline project in the state, though the terms of the deal were not immediately made clear.

In February, Taiwanese officials said they would ramp up purchases of U.S. natural gas to make up about one-third of its imported supply this year, and reduce purchases from other countries. Taiwan’s economic ministry had no immediate comment.

Surging energy prices lifted the U.S. annual inflation rate to 3.7 percent in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The consensus estimate among economists was 3.6 percent. Stripping out the volatile energy and food categories, the 12-month core inflation rate was 2.6 percent, slightly above the market forecast of 2.5 percent.
