ADHD: Feed Kids These Foods, Avoid These—Harvard Psychiatrist Uma Naidoo
What if the rise in ADHD isn’t just about diagnosis – but about what kids are eating every day?
In this Vital Signs interview, Harvard-trained psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo points to a growing concern: ultra-processed foods, added sugars, and nutrient-poor diets may be quietly affecting how children think and behave.
As ADHD rates climb, she raises a question many parents are starting to ask – could food be part of the problem?
“The gut and brain are connected,” she explains, describing how junk food can disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to inflammation that may impact focus, mood, and behavior over time.
Food’s influence over brain health may start earlier than expected. “Brain development starts with the health of the mother,” Naidoo says, noting that nutrition before pregnancy can shape a child’s development from the very start.
From sugary breakfast cereals to processed school lunches, everyday food choices may be creating subtle but cumulative effects. Parents and teachers commonly notice changes in behavior around mealtimes – but often stop short of connecting it to what’s on the plate.
Naidoo doesn’t claim food is the only cause of ADHD. But she makes a compelling case that it’s one of the most overlooked—and most changeable—factors.
If that’s true, then one of the biggest influences on a child’s brain might not be therapy or medication – it might be lunch.
