Alzheimer’s: 12 Vitamins, Foods, Exercises for Brain Metabolism | David Perlmutter, MD

While the use of hunger-cutting drugs, like Ozempic, for weight loss soars, scientists are probing their potential to stave off brain diseases, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

A study of GLP-1 receptor agonist Exenatide showed neuroprotective effects for Parkinson’s disease patients. Neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter, MD, said that this shows that brain disorders, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, involve metabolic shifts.

“Because that’s what the GLP-1 drugs do. They target our metabolism first and foremost,” he added.

Perlmutter is a fellow of the American College of Nutrition and author of “Brain Defenders.”

On “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon,” he revealed his top diet and lifestyle tips for optimizing mitochondria—our cellular powerhouses—for better health.

When mitochondrial function declines, metabolism often declines with it. Blood sugar rises, inflammation increases, and microglia—the brain’s immune defenders—can shift into a damaging mode. Over time, that shift may contribute to neurodegenerative disease, Perlmutter said.

Regular aerobic exercise combined with resistance training stimulates new mitochondrial growth and improves insulin sensitivity. Keeping fasting insulin low and blood sugar stable reduces inflammatory stress on the brain. Prioritizing restorative sleep allows metabolic repair.

Specific nutrients discussed include creatine to support cellular energy, DHA for neuronal membranes, vitamin D for immune regulation, magnesium-L-threonate for cognitive support, and sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts for its antioxidant effects.
