AI Is Driving a Power Buildout. Will the Forecasts Hold? | Scott Ebeling

Electricity demand is rising as artificial intelligence (AI) data centers seek enormous amounts of power and manufacturers look to expand production in the United States. But the pressure on the grid is not as simple as whether the country can produce enough electricity.

The harder issue is timing. Adding demand and adding usable power do not happen on the same schedule. The costs that follow can affect hyperscalers very differently from the businesses and households already relying on the system.

Scott Ebeling, head of energy strategy at BOX Energy Solutions, joins us to explain what this buildout looks like from inside the electricity market. He also examines a less obvious risk on the power side of the AI boom, where today’s infrastructure decisions depend heavily on what demand looks like years from now.
