In the eyes of former Hong Kong lawmaker Alan Leong, what is the real significance of the recent district elections in Hong Kong, in which the pro-democracy camp won an unprecedented victory?

Why is it in the self-interest of the US and liberal democracies worldwide to support the Hong Kong protesters?

And how might the situation in Hong Kong foreshadow the future of the rest of the world if communist China isn’t held in check?

This is American Thought Leaders ??, and I’m Jan Jekielek.

Today we sit down with Alan Leong, a preeminent figure for Hong Kong democracy. He ran for the position of Hong Kong’s Chief Executive in 2007, and served on the Legislative Council for 12 years. In 2014, he helped lead the Umbrella Movement and currently serves as Chairman of the pro-democracy Civic Party.
