Canada-China relations have been on a downslide since the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver in December 2018 and China’s subsequent arrest of Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael in China, as well as other retaliatory actions by Beijing.

Other notable examples include China’s detention of two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Micahel Spavor, just days after Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, an executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei in 2018.

The Canadians have been arbitrarily detained in China since December 2018, coinciding with U.S. efforts to extradite Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of China’s tech giant Huawei.

Their detention was widely seen as retaliation by Beijing for Canada's arrest of Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou on Dec. 1, 2018 at the request of U.S. authorities.

Relations between China and Canada nosedived last December after Vancouver police detained Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co, on a U.S. arrest warrant. Beijing is demanding her return.

Kovrig and Spavor have been in prison in China since December 2018 in what is widely seen as retaliation for Canada arresting Chinese high-tech executive Meng Wanzhou on an American extradition warrant.

Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes says in a decision released Wednesday that the allegations against Meng Wanzhou could constitute a crime in Canada.

The two men were first detained more than 18 months ago, shortly after the arrest of Huawei senior executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver on a U.S. warrant relating to multiple charges, including bank fraud and violating U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Earlier in the year as the scandal unfolded, Canada started taking heat from China for having detained Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou for extradition to the United States.

OTTAWA—Canada joined with its major allies Thursday in condemning China for imposing a new national security law on Hong Kong, one day after a contentious B.C. court ruling in the Meng Wanzhou affair.
