News of his capture comes as China has warned Canada to release Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou immediately or face "grave consequences." Meng was granted bail in a Canadian court on Dec. 11.

McCallum, a former Liberal cabinet minister, was fired from his post by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau early this year after speaking out of line on the case of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada on a U.S. extradition request.

On Monday, the United States announced criminal charges against Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou and the Chinese technology firm. But Mnuchin said he did not expect the issue to be part of the economic talks.

Canada's relationship with the Chinese regime has deteriorated significantly since last December when Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on an extradition request from the United States.

The company’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, is also personally indicted in this case. She was arrested in Canada last December and is currently fighting extradition proceedings.

Trump said he didn’t discuss Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei executive whose arrest in Canada in response to a U.S. extradition request is widely believed to have triggered Beijing’s detention of the two Canadians.

The two leaders also discussed the extradition request for Huawei senior executive Meng Wanzhou—though Meng wasn't specifically named—and reaffirmed the importance of respecting judicial independence and the rule of law.

He was detained after police in Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, on Dec. 1 at the request of U.S. authorities, infuriating Beijing.
