On Dec. 12, Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale confirmed the detention of former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig. He was reportedly detained in Beijing on Dec. 11 during one of his regular visits to the city.

And almost immediately after, the “two Michaels” imprisoned in China—Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor—were released on bail for “medical reasons.”

Those interests begin with securing the release of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who have been detained since last December, shortly after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on a U.S. extradition warrant.

Michael Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat who now works for think tank Crisis Group, and Michael Spavor, a Canadian entrepreneur who has worked extensively in North Korea, were detained by Beijing on national security grounds on Dec. 10.

Michael Kovrig, who at one time served as a Canadian diplomat and helped with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s official trip to Hong Kong in 2016, was recently detained by Chinese authorities.

Since Meng’s arrest, China has arrested Canadian citizens Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, sentenced two other Canadians, Robert Schellenberg and Fan Wei, to death on drug smuggling charges, and blocked Canadian agricultural imports.

Michael Kovrig, who at one time served as a diplomat for Canada and helped with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's official trip to Hong Kong in 2016, has been detained by Chinese authorities. The reason for his capture has not yet been made clear.
