(Thomas Peter/Reuters) Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam suspended the bill on June 15 after some of the largest protests in the city in decades, but stopped short of protesters' demands to scrap it.

Although the city’s leader Carrie Lam in early September announced that the government would withdraw the extradition bill that triggered the mass protests, this has not assuaged protesters’ concerns.

The Hong Kong government and authorities in Beijing have condemned the violence and said they stand by the police and the city's embattled leader, Carrie Lam.

After debate of the government's controversial extradition bill was suspended by Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam in a press conference on June 15, many are voicing how Lam failed to address the concerns shared by many Hong Kongers over the legislation.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said at a press conference on June 10 that she would put the extradition bill up for debate before the city’s Legislative Council (LegCo) on June 12, as scheduled.

At a news conference after the results were announced, Carrie Lam said that her "priority will be to heal the divide and to ease the frustrations and to unite our society to move forward."
