Statistics Canada's latest Labour Force Survey indicated Canada's unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage points to 6.5 percent in November, with 54,000 jobs being created.
The report marked the second month in a row unemployment fell.
Government statistics pointed to high youth unemployment during the summer months with a 14.6 percent unemployment rate for Canadians aged 15 to 24 in July.
"Unemployment insurance claims received from states have largely moved sideways in recent weeks," Jefferson said in a Nov. 17 speech at the Kansas City Fed.
The unemployment rate, however, dipped to 4.4 percent, below expectations.

“This fall in employment, combined with a drop in unemployment of 3,000 people, meant that the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1 per cent for May,” said ABS head of labour statistics Sean Crick.

Leisure and hospitality was the sector that created the most jobs last month. Healthcare, social assistance, and local government (excluding education) all reported job additions as well.
Earlier this month, Musk also said that "fake people born in the future" were filing fraudulent unemployment benefits, pointing to a recent DOGE survey of unemployment insurance claims.
According to DOGE, an initial survey has revealed millions of dollars of phony unemployment insurance claims since 2020.

"If unemployment stays low while inflation continues to ease, the Fed can likely afford to be patient and consider additional cuts later in 2026," they said in a Jan. 28 note.
Usually, when unemployment is as high as it is now at around seven percent, it would ease pressure on inflation as spending slows.
But that isn't happening.
Unemployment, while rising modestly, remains low by historical standards, and paycheck data show wages growing at roughly a 3 percent pace.
