The Ottawa Police Service announced on Feb. 1 it made its first arrests related to the “FreedomConvoy” protest that has taken place in Ottawa since Jan. 29.

“Everyone, please get vaccinated and get boosted,” Trudeau tweeted at the time, as the trucker-led FreedomConvoy demanding the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions was settling in Ottawa.
For the uninitiated, the FreedomConvoy protests, which began in Ottawa in January, were in direct response to a mandate requiring all Canadian cross-border truckers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
He cited the recent example of the federal government using the Emergencies Act to freeze bank accounts of supporters and protesters in the FreedomConvoy without a court order.
Opponents of the FreedomConvoy have latched onto pictures of an individual holding a Nazi flag, and the holding or display of at least two Confederate flags on Jan. 29 to try to paint the entire group as racist and bigoted.
The Department of Finance relied on the financial institutions’ “good faith” in the freezing of accounts of individuals participating or supporting the FreedomConvoy this winter and did not verify if the measure was being applied properly.
The labour dispute at British Columbia ports is receiving a federal reaction previously used for events including the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, blockades associated with the FreedomConvoy, and the short-lived rebellion in Russia last month.
