In the U.K., another Five Eyes member state, the BT Group telecom giant has said it will not use Huawei in its 5G network.

The United States, Australia, and New Zealand are among the countries that have banned Huawei from their 5G networks.

But EE Chief Executive Mark Allera told reporters the use of Huawei 5G devices had now been paused until it could be confident that devices would be supported for their lifetime.

Last week, German telecom provider Telefonica Deutschland picked Nokia of Finland and Huawei to build its 5G network.

The company’s vice-chair told Bloomberg last year that Huawei is a threat to Canada and should be barred from 5G networks.

The battle over Huawei has intensified in recent months as countries in Europe and elsewhere prepare to deploy 5G networks, starting with the auction of frequencies this year.

This latest push builds on years of EU efforts to secure 5G and other telecom networks against potential risks from certain foreign suppliers. The European Union first agreed on a 5G cybersecurity toolbox in January 2020.

Responding, Huawei said it was not a supplier to Orange's existing 4G network in France and would not feature in the company's 5G plans in France. Huawei does supply Orange's networks outside France and expects to be involved in 5G there, it said.

"As a result, Huawei have not been included in vendor selection for our 5G core," he said. "Huawei remains an important equipment provider outside the core network, and a valued innovation partner," he added.

Huawei, the world's biggest telecom equipment supplier, strongly denies the U.S. allegations and has been highly critical of calls to ban it from 5G contracts.

Britain has argued that excluding Huawei would have delayed its 5G rollout and cost consumers more.

The letter didn't mention Huawei by name, but telecom company executives who received the letter said they perceived the government to be pushing companies to not simply rely on Huawei, and use other 5G suppliers as well, FT said.

“The security of our 5G networks is obviously crucial for our economy,” Regnier told reporters. “Huawei represents materially higher risks than other 5G suppliers.”
