Canada’s ambassador to China has visited two Canadians who have been detained for nearly two years in apparent retaliation for the arrest Huawei Technologies CFO Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. extradition warrant.

BEIJING—HSBC on Saturday denied Chinese media reports that it had "framed" Huawei Technologies and played a role in the arrest of the chief financial officer (CFO) of the world's biggest telecoms equipment maker.

Washington and its allies say Huawei technology could be used to spy for China. Huawei has denied this. Britain has acknowledged that without equipment from Huawei it will take it longer to roll out faster 5G mobile networks.

China says Canada must free Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, who is fighting extradition to the United States. She was arrested by Vancouver police in December 2018.

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump signed legislation on March 12 to bar telecom carriers from using U.S. subsidies to purchase network equipment from Huawei Technologies, ZTE Corp. and other companies deemed a national security threat.

According to court documents (pdf), the U.S. government alleged that Meng had misled multiple financial institutions to provide services to Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., which would lead the banks to violate U.S. sanctions on Iran.

This means that the Canadian telecommunication giants did not take Huawei technology under consideration.

Washington has also been pushing allies to exclude products from China's Huawei Technologies from 5G networks, viewing the company as a security threat, and is paving the way for sanctions on it and other Chinese companies.

Last week Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered Huawei Technologies equipment to be purged completely from Britain's 5G network by the end of 2027. China has accused Britain of pandering to the United States.

She is charged in the United States with bank fraud, and is accused of misleading HSBC Holdings PLC about Huawei Technologies' business in Iran, which is under U.S. sanctions.

The United States had accused Meng of misguiding multiple financial institutions, including HSBC, to provide services to Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., which led the banks to violate U.S. sanctions on Iran.

Relations between China and Canada took a hit last December after Vancouver police detained Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co, on a U.S. arrest warrant.
