The world's first, and only, museum dedicated to commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen massacre of pro-democracy students in Beijing saw its final visitors stream through the doors on July 11, 2016.

HONG KONG—Thousands marched through Hong Kong streets on May 31 to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre and to protest for democracy and human rights.

Lights were switched off, candles were lit and held up, and a Tiananmen Square massacre video was played on the podium.

The vigil is the only large-scale public commemoration of the victims on Chinese soil, and the Tiananmen events remain a taboo topic on the mainland.

“Places like Tiananmen Square all have security checks. Petitioners are basically inspected wherever they go.” In many cases, she said, individuals flagged as “key persons” may be stopped entirely.

“Gao Zhisheng is a voice of conscience and a symbol of moral courage in the face of injustice,” said event host Feng Congde, who was a student leader and survivor of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

The students stayed on Tiananmen, however, and then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping ordered the People's Liberation Army to move in on the students on June 4.
