Eight Iranian women are no longer facing execution, U.S. President Donald Trump said on April 22.

Trump announced that the women would no longer be hanged, saying on Truth Social that it was “very good news.”

“I have just been informed that the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight in Iran will no longer be killed,” Trump’s post said.

The announcement followed a request from Trump for leniency.

Of the eight, four will be released immediately, according to Trump, and the other four will receive one-month prison sentences.

“I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution,” he said.

The announcement came one day after Trump called for the Iranian regime to release the women.

“Please do them no harm!” Trump said, along with a screenshot from a post on X that showed photos of the women said to be headed for execution.

“To the Iranian leaders, who will soon be in negotiations with my representatives: I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so.”

There were widespread protests in Iran starting in January of this year. Human rights groups said the protests led to a clampdown by the Iranian government.

Trump said the U.S. government would support demonstrators in mid-January of this year, before the conflict with Iran began.

The same month, he told reporters on Air Force One that his administration had “stopped 837 hangings” in Iran, and he told those in power that they could face retribution if more executions of protesters were to go forward.

Following Trump’s announcement, news spread that Iran denied that the women were facing execution.

The White House referred The Epoch Times to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s recent comments on Fox News, where she repeated the president’s position.

Leavitt said news of the scheduled execution came to Trump’s desk directly and that the Iranians “answered and have agreed not to execute them.”

The press secretary said that the president “received direct word from the Iranian regime … that [the women’s] lives are going to be spared.”

She said the canceled executions were a result of Trump’s request and said the protesters “certainly deserve a chance to continue living their lives freely and peacefully.”

“Now that will happen thanks to President Trump, because he’s a humanitarian at heart,” she said.

The Iranian ceasefire was extended by the president, and the administration has said peace negotiations will resume in Pakistan shortly.
