Police in Midland, Texas, were responding to a report of an active shooter on June 12 at a building in the 4600 block of West Wall Street, according to the department.
“Officers heard gunfire coming from the building and worked quickly to secure and clear the area,” the police reported on social media.
Armored units were deployed to the scene, and other agencies responded.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong confirmed one person had died and 11 others have been injured in the shooting.
“Our thoughts and prayers are absolutely with the victims and with the community,” Blong told reporters at a press conference.
A perimeter has been established, and a suspect is contained inside the building near the corner of Industrial Avenue and Wall Street, Blong said.
Police officers and a SWAT team were actively engaged in a standoff with the suspect, according to the mayor.
City officials did not yet have details about the suspect or the person who died in the shooting, he added.
Friday’s shooting incident began across the city at another location east of the building and progressed to where the shooting occurred. Police were dispatched a few minutes after 8 a.m. local time.
A family reunification center was opened at Midland Memorial Hospital where people seeking to reunite with loved ones were encouraged to reach out for help. The number at the location was 432-631-4689.
The city was having trouble getting information to the Midland community through its Facebook account due to an ongoing national outage, officials said.
The public was encouraged to seek information posted on the city’s X account, Blong said.
The United Way was taking local donations for those who wanted to help victims.
