President Donald Trump alleged on Tuesday that the U.S. Census Bureau has identified 24,000 votes by non-citizens in an ongoing analysis of 2020 ballots that has searched 128 million voter records linked so far.
“The Census Bureau has begun checking the Voter Records from 2020 against their Citizenship Records. On the first 128,000,000 Voters, the Census Bureau proves that over 24,000 Noncitizens voted illegally!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Trump said that these analyses were ongoing, and that the numbers of illegal ballots would “explode” after the final 32 million votes were analyzed.
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick suggested that the remaining 32 million ballots could include “tens of thousands of additional illegal voters.”
“The Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau just released its analysis showing more than 24,000 noncitizens illegally voted in the 2020 election. Not just registered but literally illegally voted. And that is just the beginning,” Lutnick wrote in a post on X. “More than 32 million more voters’ records will be analyzed in the coming weeks, and these records will likely show tens of thousands of additional illegal voters.
“The American people deserve transparency,” Lutnick said. “We are making sure the facts are out for everyone to see.”
Following the report, Trump renewed his assertions that he won the 2020 election. President Joe Biden won the election by 74 electoral votes across multiple swing states, with Biden tallying at least 10,000 more votes in the contested races.
“I WON THE ELECTION!” Trump said of the report.
The preliminary report from the Census Bureau, however, does not show any significant electoral impacts from the illegal ballots.
Based on the current numbers provided, Trump still would have fallen short of a win in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada if none of the illegal ballots reported had been cast.
In Michigan, Biden defeated Trump by more than 1.5 million votes. According to the Census Bureau’s analysis, 600 non-citizens voted in the state.
In Wisconsin, Biden defeated Trump by more than 20,000 votes. The Census Bureau has identified 500 non-citizen ballots cast in the contest.
In Pennsylvania, Biden defeated Trump by more than 75,000 votes. The Census Bureau identified 1,000 non-citizen votes in the race.
In Georgia, Biden defeated Trump by more than 11,000 votes. The Census Bureau identified 400 non-citizen ballots cast in the election.
In Arizona, Biden defeated Trump by more than 10,000 votes. The Census Bureau identified 1,100 non-citizen voters in the race.
In Nevada, Biden defeated Trump by more than 30,000 votes. The Census Bureau identified 250 non-citizen ballots cast in the contest.
Based on the preliminary numbers, none of the critical outcomes in any major 2020 presidential contest would have been altered by the quantity of non-citizen ballots reported.
In his Truth Social post on the report, Trump repeated calls for Congress to pass the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.
“We must pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” Trump wrote.
The bill has been passed by the House, but has stalled in the Senate amid opposition by Senate Democrats. These critics say that the measure would make it harder for American citizens to vote.
Republicans would need 60 votes—or an end to the filibuster—to pass the measure through the upper chamber.
Senators have long been resistant to abandoning the filibuster, with many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle viewing it as a critical tool for the minority party. Despite bids from lawmakers in the House, as well as Trump, to alter the procedure, the Senate has largely maintained its hesitance on weakening the filibuster any further.
