WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump announced on Sept. 5 that the United States will host the 2026 Group of 20 (G20) summit in Miami, which coincides with the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Calling it “a very exciting thing,” Trump confirmed that the gathering will take place at the Trump National Doral Golf Club in December 2026.

“I think that everybody wants it there because it’s right next to the airport,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “It’s the best location. We will not make any money on it.”

Standing alongside the president, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez called the summit a “tremendous” opportunity for the city’s economy, highlighting the benefits for hospitality workers, small business owners, and the city’s global image.

Trump also announced that he will not attend the 2025 G20 summit in South Africa, confirming that Vice President JD Vance will represent the United States instead.

The G20 is made up of 19 countries and two regional blocs, the European Union and the African Union. Its members include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK, and the United States.

Trump said some non-member countries, including Poland, would also be invited to the Miami summit.

When asked whether Russia would receive an invitation, he said: “No, I haven’t thought of that. It’s an interesting question. I want to think about that for a little while.”

The summit could also help the tourism industry, which has been under pressure amid concerns about U.S. immigration policies and travel restrictions.

“A G20 Summit in South Florida will provide the Trump Administration with unique ways to advance U.S. national security, foreign policy, and economic policy interests on the world stage,” Michael Walsh, a foreign policy expert, told The Epoch Times in an email.

“For example, there have been concerns expressed about the future of international tourism to the United States over the past few months. This will provide an opportunity for President Trump and his advisers to try to make the case that there is no substitute for a U.S. vacation.”

During his first term, Trump proposed hosting the Group of Seven summit at the resort but eventually dropped the idea after receiving backlash.

“I thought I was doing something very good for our country by using Trump National Doral, in Miami, for hosting the [Group of Seven] leaders,” Trump wrote on Twitter, now X, on Oct. 20, 2019.

“I announced that I would be willing to do it at NO PROFIT or if legally permissible at ZERO COST to the USA. But as usual the Hostile Media & their Democrat Partners went CRAZY!”
