President Donald Trump said on Sept. 22 that his administration stopped a United Nations body from “secretly establishing” a global carbon tax, as he opposed the idea of global governance.
Trump made the remarks at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, saying the United States had helped implement sweeping reforms at the international body, including a 15 percent cut to its 2026 budget and the elimination of more than 4,000 positions from United Nations bureaucracy.
“Last year, my administration was forced to intervene to stop an obscure U.N. body, the International Maritime Organization, from secretly establishing a first-ever global carbon tax. Very expensive tax,” he said.
Trump said the alleged global carbon tax could drive up international shipping costs by 10 to 20 percent, adding that he would oppose any effort to create what he called a “global government.”
“There is no global government. And while I’m president, there will be no global taxes,” the president remarked.
Trump also said he is opposed to the International Criminal Court (ICC), calling it an “out-of-control institution.” He said the United States would not allow its service members to be investigated by the ICC.
