New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin got in on the frenzy of activity that continues now that the NFL is back in business by signing a contract extension through 2012.

Coughlin, who has been at the helm of the Giants since 2004 said in a press release, “I am grateful for the opportunity. To be the head coach of the New York Giants is the fulfillment of a dream for somebody who grew up where I grew up and when I grew up.

“As I have said roughly a thousand times, we’re all on one-year contracts in this business, but the reality is that I am thankful to work for people like the Maras and the Tisches and with people like [General Manager] Jerry Reese and his staff, as well as my coaching staff and our players."

Coughlin led the Giants to a 10¬6 record last season, but, for the second year in a row, the team did not make the playoffs. Despite that fact, Giants President John Mara backed his coach, “As we said after the season, we strongly believe in Tom. We believe in the job he has done, and we believe in his ability to lead our team in the future. Everybody was on the same page in arriving at the extension."

With the lockout only days in the past and training camp set to open on Friday, the Giants have already made some moves. They released lineman Shaun O’Hara, Shawn Andrews, and Rich Seubert and signed former San Francisco 49er center David Baas. The Giants also came to terms with offensive tackle Kevin Boothe, giving him a two year deal.

On the coaching front, 14-year veteran Larry Izzo signed on as the new assistant special teams coach. Izzo, who won three Super Bowls with New England, will replace Thomas McGaughney. “This guy is a very intense, very serious, very focused young guy,” Coach Coughlin said in a press release, “I think our players will relate very well to a guy like this.”

The Giants open the preseason on Saturday August 13 at the Carolina Panthers.
