Deadly Stabbing Rampage Reported in Shenyang as Chinese Authorities Remain Silent

A deadly stabbing rampage in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang has left multiple people dead and injured, according to witness accounts and online reports, with discussions of the incident appearing to have been censored online.

The attack unfolded on the afternoon of April 4 in a busy commercial and residential district in the city. Witnesses described a lone assailant wielding a knife and attacking pedestrians at random along a crowded stretch of road.

Chinese authorities have not issued an official statement on the incident as of publication time, and many details remain unconfirmed. However, accounts from residents and social media users describe a scene of chaos and extreme violence. Several witnesses spoke to The Epoch Times on condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisal.

Witnesses Describe Graphic Violence

A local woman told The Epoch Times that the attacker began assaulting people near a residential complex before continuing toward a nearby elementary school area, injuring and killing multiple victims along the way.

“In total, six people were killed, and more than a dozen were injured,” she said, adding that one victim was decapitated in the attack.

“It was extremely bloody. The victims included elderly people and young individuals.”

A male witness told The Epoch Times he arrived shortly after the attack began and saw several bodies lying on the ground.

“One of them had no head,” he said. “There were five or six people down. It was terrifying—I’m still shaken.”

The man estimated that the attacker moved along a stretch of about 100 meters, striking victims without warning. He said the suspect later died after jumping from a building. The Epoch Times could not independently verify this claim.

News of the incident spread rapidly on Chinese social media platforms, where users posted videos and searched for information about what had happened there. However, within hours, comment sections on related posts were taken down, and videos were removed.

As of writing, no official reports or public briefings have been released by local authorities. The Epoch Times found that as of April 6, footage and discussion of the incident appeared to have been heavily censored on Chinese online platforms, with only limited material surfacing on overseas social media.

Part of a Broader Pattern

In recent years, Chinese netizens have coined the term “Zhang Xianzhong phenomenon” to describe acts of indiscriminate violence driven by personal grievances against society. The phrase references a historical figure associated with mass killings and has become shorthand for extreme retaliatory violence.

Chinese officials have consistently described such incidents as isolated cases. At a press briefing in 2024, foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian characterized similar attacks as “sporadic” and maintained that China remains “one of the safest countries in the world.”

However, the Shenyang attack comes amid a string of recent violent incidents reported across China, many involving apparent random attacks on civilians.

Just days earlier, on March 31, a man in Wuhan injured several people in a knife attack, according to multiple Chinese social media posts. Police said four victims were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, though some online accounts claimed higher casualties.

On March 26, two separate stabbing incidents were reported in Shenzhen, leaving multiple people dead or injured, according to eyewitness accounts and residents.

None of these incidents were reported by China’s state-controlled media.
