A pair of desperate contenders collide in a must-win college football showdown, the playoffs are on the line in a critical SEC dogfight, and a pair of surprising NFL leaders bang helmets in the nation’s capital.

Also, a legendary basketball dynasty refuses to go down without a fight, and an ice hockey superstar zeroes in on the biggest goal of his career.

We’ll get to each one of these impactful stories in just a bit, but as we begin today’s edition of The Epoch Times Sports Brief, we laugh at and dismiss those other programs that reward listeners with a low-rent, quickly disposable bumper sticker.

We’ll start with college football, and tomorrow, the SEC takes center stage with a couple of premier programs. The winner stays alive, the loser is out, both coaches are under fire, and here’s what’s going on.

High-Stakes Showdown in the SEC

Saturday night, Alabama heads to Tiger Stadium, better known as Death Valley, in Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers, and this one’s gonna be a knock-out in more ways than one.

Both teams expect to contend for the national championship every year, each of these underperforming squads has already dropped two games, and whoever loses this massive collision can say “so long” to their college football playoff dreams.

Both head coaches are under tremendous pressure because so far, neither one of them is getting it done. Bama’s first-year head coach, Kalen DeBoer, had some pretty big shoes to fill when he took over for the legendary Nick Saban, but no one thought the Tide would be fighting this hard just to make the playoffs at this point in the season.

Meanwhile, LSU brought in head coach Brian Kelly a few years ago to get them back to the mountaintop, but so far, all they’ve gotten is a boatload of hot air and heaps of disappointment.

The key to the game is Bama’s defense, which has been generating a whole bunch of turnovers, and if they can keep Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and his fleet of speedy receivers in check, it’ll be “roll Tide roll” all the way to the big dance.

On the other hand, Death Valley is a brutal place for visitors at night. Bama’s D gives up a whole bunch of chunk plays, and if the Tigers defenders can shut down Jalen Milroe and the Bama offense, they can send the Tide packing—and they’d love nothing more.

Right now, Bama is in, and LSU is on the outside knocking on the door, but whoever loses this consequential battle is gonna be watching the playoffs on the big screen at Buffalo Wild Wings, while drowning their sorrows in a big sloppy oversized bucket of hot wings smothered in ranch dressing.

We’ll stay in the SEC now and tomorrow it’s an enormous must-win tussle between another pair of title contenders, and here’s what’s on the line.

The Season’s on the Line for Ole Miss

Tomorrow afternoon, third-ranked Georgia heads to Mississippi to take on Lane Kiffin and his 16th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels.

Right now, there’s a logjam at the top of the SEC, and Ole Miss can make it a whole lot messier if they can knock off the big Dawgs on the block.

In case you’re not aware, Kiffin has built Ole Miss into a darn good program, but he’s still looking for a crucial signature win in the rugged SEC, where they always seem to be battling their big brothers for a spot at the grown up’s table.

This season, the Rebels have only lost twice, including an overtime thriller to LSU. They’ve got a very good QB in Jaxson Dart, who’s coming off a monster 500-yard game, and now they get a huge opportunity to take Georgia down a peg and stake their claim to the playoffs.

For the mighty Bulldogs, even if they lose, they could still sneak into the back end of the playoffs. However, they’d have to win every game the rest of the way to get there, and next week they go head-to-head against seventh-ranked Tennessee.

As you know, it’s always tough sledding in the brutal SEC, where each and every week is a fight to the finish, and winning tomorrow’s critical game is an absolute must if either of these desperate teams wants to stay in the hunt for college football’s biggest prize.

We’re scooting along now to a Sunday afternoon big league blockbuster featuring hard-nosed coaches, swarming Ds, and a couple of unexpected division leaders, and here’s what’s going on.

Surprising Division Leaders Face Off in NFL Game of the Week

The Pittsburgh Steelers have jumped out to a surprising 6–2 record halfway through the season, and this weekend, they head to the nation’s capital to pay a visit to the city’s favorite new monument, the fast-rising Commanders.

The Washington football team has been a doormat for decades—but that was before rookie sensation Jayden Daniels arrived and took the league by storm. Now, head coach Dan Quinn is a serious candidate for coach of the year, the fundamentally sound Commanders top the NFC East, and they’re improving each and every week.

A few days ago, the team picked up four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the Saints—and that means the front office believes this rapidly ascending young squad has a legit chance to go all the way to the Super Bowl. That’s something the fans in Washington have been waiting more than 30 years to hear, and the energy in Northwest Stadium at game time will be nothing short of monumental.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has always been known for a smothering Steel Curtain defense, edge rusher TJ Watt is an absolute game wrecker, and veteran quarterback Russell Wilson has bounced back from a calf injury to ignite a very dull Steelers offense.

Both teams have division rivals hot on their heels, the Ravens and the Eagles, and neither one can afford to drop this pivotal matchup if they want to stay ahead in the race as the weather turns cold and the long season heads into the home stretch.

We move along now to the NBA, and tonight, a world-famous dynasty gets a huge opportunity to prove that their reign is not over yet, and here’s the lowdown.

NBA Dynasty Aims to Prove They’re Not Done Yet

The Golden State Warriors are off to a shocking 7–1 start, they’re tied for the best record in the Western Conference, and tonight, they have an early season showdown with the undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rumors of their untimely demise appear to be greatly exaggerated. Head coach Steve Kerr is still the best in the league, all-world guard Steph Curry is still the best shooter in the NBA, and just a couple of days ago, the Warriors knocked off the defending champion Celtics in Boston.

Right now, they’ve got the league’s second-best defense, its third top-scoring offense, and a deep roster full of versatile players the coach is using exceptionally well.

Just a reminder, they’re doing all of this without longtime Warrior Klay Thompson, who left for Dallas as a free agent after winning four titles with his teammates.

Meanwhile, the 9–0 Cavaliers are off to their best start ever. They also have a deep bench, they play tenacious defense, and they lead the league in field goal percentage.

All-star guard Donovan Mitchell leads the way for the Cavs, but he’s got plenty of help, and this team is beginning to believe it actually has a shot at winning the NBA championship.

By the way, Cleveland’s first-year head coach Kenny Atkinson spent the past three years as an assistant for the Warriors, and tonight they’ll face each other for the first time this season before a packed house. This is the early season matchup that everyone’s been dying to see.

We’ve got time for just one more story today and this one involves the chase for one of the most cherished records in the entire NHL, and here’s what you need to know.

NHL Superstar Chases Legendary Goal

Alex Ovechkin may be one of the oldest players in the league, but that won’t stop him in his quest to overtake the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer.

The 39-year-old left wing has netted a phenomenal six goals in the past five games—right now he’s got a grand total of 861—and the man they call “the Great 8” only needs 34 more goals to break the Great One’s long-standing record.

He gets another chance to add to his season tally tonight, when the 9–3 Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins in D.C., and again tomorrow, when the Caps head to St. Louis for a skate-off against the Blues.

Taking a quick look around the league, last year’s Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, are off to another hot start in the Eastern Conference, along with the Carolina Hurricanes.

But the big story is out west, where the Winnipeg Jets have just blasted off to a 13–1 start behind the league’s best power play efficiency and the remarkable goaltending of Connor Hellebuyck. Right now, they look like legitimate contenders for this season’s coveted Stanley Cup trophy, and tomorrow night they host the 8–4 Dallas Stars.

By the way, the Minnesota Wild, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the L.A. Kings are also near the top of the Western Conference mix, but as everyone knows, the season’s just heating up, and the unpredictable NHL playoffs are always a topsy-turvy affair.

Before we go, we’d like to acknowledge an incredible sports record that took place in the NFL on this day back in 1970, when Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints booted a record-smashing 63-yard field goal as the clock ran out to beat the Detroit Lions.

Dempsey’s legendary record lasted more than 40 years before it was finally broken, and what makes his accomplishment even more inspiring is that the kicker was born without toes on his right foot and he wore a special shoe that allowed him to compete in the NFL.
