How This Mayor Beat COVID, Set an Example for Rest of US | Florida Summit
Ocala, Fla. Mayor Kent Guinn was one of the few city-level leaders in the United States who vetoed the mask ordinance during the COVID-19 state of emergency.
“I probably got about 900 emails from around the country … probably 90 percent of them were, ‘Thank you. You did the right thing. I agree with you,’” he said in his speech at the 2023 Florida Summit on COVID.
“The other 10 percent—ninety, a hundred of them—were, ‘I hope you die, I hope your family gets COVID.’”
Eventually, Mayor Guinn did catch COVID, and he even became hypoxic. But he says he would challenge the mainstream narrative again if he had to. And this time, with the treatment he received.
“To my knowledge, he was the only person to have received the full therapeutic dose of Ivermectin while in the hospital—probably in the United States of America,” said Dr. John Littell, organizer of the summit. Dr. Littell personally treated Mayor Guinn and fought with the hospital to give his high-profile patient Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine. It took some time, but the mayor made a full recovery.
“[Dr. Littell] led the way on blazing a trail for me to be a trailblazer, because I didn’t know anything about [COVID] until I met him and talked to him.”
Throughout the pandemic, the mayor continued to disobey state-of-emergency orders. That included the time when restaurants were not allowed to accept customers at a rate above 50 percent of their capacity.
“I said, ‘Our police department is not going to be going around counting heads in restaurants.’”
As he reflected on his leadership, he urged communities around the country to start asking their own leaders about where they stood on COVID.
“The right decisions are always the popular ones,” he said.
