Nonverbal Autistic Son Opens Blog and Writes Poetry—Here’s What His Mom Did
Honey Rinicella, executive director at the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs, is a mother of twin boys with vaccine-induced autism. When they were infants, they had severe reactions after receiving routine immunizations.
“They atrophied. They lost their muscle tone. They became essentially limp noodles. They couldn’t talk anymore. … Victor became like an exposed nerve. Every noise bothered him, he was screaming, he was like on sensory overload. And my other son, Vincent, he just appeared deaf. And like, he would go into a corner and ignore us,” said Ms. Rinicella.
The twins were diagnosed with autism. Further research revealed that one of the children had mitochondrial dysfunction.
“Which is why [Victor] couldn’t handle all those inoculations,” she said.
Ms. Rinicella tried many ways to help her sons. And then, by chance, she came across a method that used spelling to help non-verbal children master communication. It gave incredible results.
“Within four months, Vincent was having open conversations and saying words that I couldn’t even spell, and my mind was just blown that this child, that everybody presumed was like a three-year-old mentality, was like off the charts. Brilliant,” said Ms. Rinicella.
She believes that those who are unable to speak actually have incredible potential. And it’s the job of professionals to unlock it.
“These poor kids have been imprisoned. I mean, it’s crazy. It’s just time to bring them all free. So we have to just change the narrative of how we look at non-speakers and just assume that they’re all in there until we can prove otherwise.”
Today, Ms. Rinecella holds conferences for doctors to discuss how to treat children with special needs.
“So we need to change the mindset of the educators and practitioners, anybody who works with any of these children with special needs, we need to teach them to resume intellect. So they can go and find a spelling to communicate practitioner, or they can go to spellers.com and find a spellers practitioner, and they can try the modality for themselves.”
