Which Foods Most Harm the Liver, Cause Diabetes? Feat. Dr. Jason Fung
Nearly one in 10 Americans has Type 2 diabetes, and globally, more than 25 percent of people have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), based on studies from the past ten years.
Watch our exclusive episode, only on NTD.
Both diseases are largely caused by eating excess sugar, namely glucose and fructose.
How do these sugars impact the body differently? In which foods are they silently lurking in high amounts?
Optimistically, both Type 2 diabetes and NAFLD can be reversed, says Dr. Jason Fung, best-selling author of “The Obesity Code” and “The Diabetes Code.”
However, many people are unaware of how much glucose or fructose is in common foods like white bread and many fruits.
“Your blood glucose will go up more if you eat a slice of [white] bread than if you drink Coca-Cola,” Fung says.
“However, it doesn’t mean the Coca-Cola is better. The fructose [in coke] does many other harmful things in the body because of how it’s metabolized in the liver.”
How do slowly digested carbohydrates impact the body differently compared to the quickly-digested carbohydrates of white bread, Coca-Cola, and orange juice?
How does food addiction resemble drug addiction, and should it be dealt with the same way?
Fung reveals the foods to eat and those to avoid to improve health and stave off Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease.
As a nephrologist, Fung specializes in treating acute and chronic kidney problems and disease, including diabetes and kidney disease.
