Tips to Rein in Rage to Rescue Relationships | Brad Jacobs MD
Rage has an unmistakable profile as it sets into the body, including rising blood pressure, heart rate, and muscular tension. It’s through being aware of these changes and having a system to defuse them that rage can be reined in and relationships rescued, Stanford-trained physician Dr. Brad Jacobs said on “Vital Signs”
Jacobs shared his views on why many men struggle with feelings loneliness, depression, and anger. His system to help men better regulate their emotions is a path to improved health and relationships, he said.
Using examples from his own experience as a father, Jacobs describes how learned ideas about authority and discipline can strain relationships, and how stepping away from reactive behavior can change those dynamics over time. He also discusses what he sees as two common responses among men today: pushing harder through aggression, or pulling back and surrendering all authority.
Jacobs proposes a third approach that aims to balance strength with emotional awareness. Throughout the discussion, he frames masculinity as something that can be developed through self-observation and practical skills, rather than something defined by labels or cultural expectations.
Rather than approaching masculinity as a social debate, Jacobs focuses on how stress, anger, and emotional shutdown show up in the body. He explains how patterns many men recognize—losing control during conflict, withdrawing under pressure, or relying on dominance—are often tied to measurable physical responses, such as rising stress hormones, disrupted sleep, and changes in heart rate and blood pressure.
