What if trauma isn’t just something we remember—but something the body learns?
In this Vital Signs interview, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. David Rabin points to a growing gap in mental health treatment: While antidepressants and antipsychotics are a mainstay of PTSD treatment, a large proportion of patients show no significant improvement through this intervention.
Part of the problem, he suggests, lies in how trauma is formed. It’s not only the event itself, but what happens after. When hardship is met with blame or lack of support, the brain can “cement” fear into the nervous system—leading to chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, poor sleep, and a persistent sense of danger.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, Rabin’s work explores how the body relearns safety. From breathing techniques and biofeedback to something as simple as music or touch, certain sensory experiences can rapidly shift the nervous system out of stress mode by activating the vagus nerve.
That may explain why a familiar song, a hug, or even time in nature can feel so grounding. These aren’t just emotional comforts—they may be biological signals that the body is safe again.
As new therapies emerge—including approaches that use sound, vibration, and even short-term psychedelic-assisted treatment—the field is beginning to rethink a basic question: If trauma is learned in the body, could healing start there, too?
