Paxton Prevails in Texas Runoff; 1 Dead, 9 Missing After Chemical Tank Implosion | NTD Good Morning (May 27)

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton ousted four-term U.S. Senator John Cornyn in the May 26 Republican primary runoff and will now face ​the Democratic Party’s state Rep. James Talarico in a high-profile race that could help decide control of the Senate.

Paxton won President Donald Trump’s endorsement late in the game, just one week before the runoff. Cornyn had served in the Senate for 23 years and said he would still support the Republican ticket after his loss. In the Democratic Party’s primary runoff, Rep. Al Green was ousted by Rep. Christian Menefee.

A massive chemical tank collapsed Tuesday morning at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging paper mill in Longview, Washington. Officials say the tank contained nearly 900,000 gallons of a corrosive chemical mixture known as white liquor. The fire department says the collapse killed at least one worker and injured nine others. Emergency crews say recovery efforts were suspended overnight because the damaged tank remains unstable. Investigators say it remains unclear what caused the tank to implode. Recovery crews are expected to return today once the damaged structure can be safely stabilized.

The ‌Trump administration intends to maintain tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Tuesday as the United States launches negotiations to revamp the North American free trade pact. The United States has significant trade issues with Canada, Greer told a Council on Foreign Relations event in Washington ahead of bilateral negotiations ​with Mexico that exclude the northern U.S. neighbor.
