Soon after, Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were detained in China, in a move that was widely seen as retaliation.

Meng's arrest has infuriated China, which has since detained two Canadians in moves that have pushed Canada-China diplomatic relations to a new low.

Days after her arrest, Chinese authorities detained two Canadians—former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor—on spying charges, in a move widely seen as retaliation.

Chabot and Forbes are active members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and all four accused were arrested last week in Quebec City.
