On the heels of the Beijing regime’s announcement that espionage charges have been laid against two Canadiansdetained in China, a new survey indicates that 80 percent of Canadians think Ottawa should speak out more strongly against China’s human rights

A leader of the fight to secure freedom for a Canadian human-rights activist detained in China for 17 years is taking the latest diplomatic deep-freeze between Ottawa and Beijing in stride.

In May, Ottawa had advised Canadians to expect scrutiny at U.S. border crossings. It advised travellers to comply with border agents, and warned travellers they could be detained and have their cellphones searched.

Michael Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat, was detained on the same day as Spavor, for the same alleged offense, spying. Kovrig still faces life in prison.
The two Canadians were detained in China just days later and have been held ever since, while Meng has been released on bail and remains under house arrest at her Vancouver mansion.
