Days after Meng's arrest, Chinese authorities detained two Canadians—Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat, and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur—in a move widely seen as retaliatory.

The "two Michaels," as they're known, were arrested by Beijing shortly after Canadian authorities detained Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Chinese telecom giant Huawei, at the behest of the United States.

President Donald Trump to raise the issue of the two Canadians detained, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. But the United States has plenty of its own concerns with China. 

The bans were eventually lifted in 2022 following the release of Meng in 2021, with China also releasing two Canadian citizens it had detained in apparent retaliation.

He is currently detained pending trial in both cases. According to a statement of facts (pdf) accompanying the charges, Pelham attempted to leave the United States for Canada on March 17, 2021, but was denied entry by the Canadian authorities.

China denounced her arrest, warning of unspecified consequences unless she was released, and has since detained two Canadians on suspicion of endangering state security. The death sentence was quickly condemned by rights groups.

Sun Qian, a Chinese Canadian who practices Falun Gong, has been illegally detained by the Chinese Communist Party. Recently, she was sentenced to eight years in prison by Beijing’s Chaoyang People's Court. This case has been highly publicized.

Kovrig said support from Canadian consular officials and the public buoyed him during his detention in China, where he and fellow Canadian Michael Spavor were arrested in December 2018.
