Commentary The Liberal government’s case for invoking the Emergencies Act in response to the truckers' Freedom Convoy protests last February is falling apart and the formal inquiry into the use of the act hasn’t even begun yet.

In January, when the trucker convoy was on its way to Ottawa to protest vaccine mandates, he called the truckers a “fringe minority” with “unacceptable views.”

History will not be looking kindly upon the actions of the Canadian government during the truckers' Freedom Convoy protests of 2022.

On Jan. 11, hundreds of truckers staged a protest. Farmers from the Netherlands, Hungary, and other countries in Europe also joined the protests in Germany.

The protest at Coutts started around the same time as the truckers' Freedom Convoy was encamped in Ottawa. The demonstrations began as a way to protest against COVID-19 vaccine mandates and other government measures during the pandemic.

The organizers’ GoFundMe page says the funds are to be used to support truckers participating in the protest with fuel, food, and shelter, and “Any left over donations will be donated to a credible Veterans organization which will be chosen by the donors

The fields of battle have been varied and comprehensive, from the scientific journals to journalism to hard-core revolts on the street such as the truckers’ protest. The results have been impressive.

Jonker said he "got into big trouble" after an integrity commissioner's report announced that he had broken the code of conduct for his role in the truckers' Freedom Convoy protest held in Ottawa earlier this year.

In May 2020, a convoy of truckers honked their horns to protest the government’s trade policies, and in the process interrupted a speech President Trump was delivering in the Rose Garden of the White House.

A similar issue occurred with the Canadian protest when GoFundMe froze access to CA$4.5 million in funds. Those funds have since been released. U.S. truckers are now planning their own version of the protest from California to Washington D.C.

The act, invoked on Feb. 14, authorized the seizure of bank accounts of those involved in the trucker convoy protest in Ottawa.
