The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge held steady before the war in Iran.

A prominent seniors' advocacy group predicted on April 10 that next year's Social Security payments will likely increase by 2.8 percent under the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), as the inflation metric rose 0.9 percent month over month.

On a monthly basis, headline inflation surged by 0.9 percent, and core inflation jumped to 0.2 percent. The index for energy accounted for virtually all of March's increase, surging by 10.9 percent.

According to the agency, the inflators exploded during crashes, ejecting metal shrapnel onto vehicle occupants. Inflators are small gas generators containing chemicals that ignite to rapidly fill an air bag with gas during a collision.

The increase in fuel costs won't show up in the RBA's preferred quarterly trimmed mean inflation measure, which omits volatile items.

There is also a point to make here concerning inflation and its definition.

The Fed can lower interest rates to support the labor market, but it may also bolster inflation. Or it can keep interest rates elevated to fight inflation, but risk a further deterioration of employment conditions.

Looking ahead, the Cleveland Fed's Inflation Nowcasting model expects the March annual inflation rate to rise to 2.6 percent.

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure heated up in December as underlying price pressures persisted.

But there could be near-term inflation challenges in the next batch of reports. The Cleveland Fed Inflation Nowcasting Model estimates the March annual inflation rate will rise to 2.9 percent, fueled by soaring energy costs.

Inflation Still Bites Meanwhile, the inflation picture has worsened in recent months. Headline CPI rose 3.8 percent in the year to December, up from 3.4 percent in November.

Making matters worse, each inflation report was rendered by media as relatively good news. Inflation is “cooling,” they said, and is limited only to this sector or that, without which there would be no problem at all.

The latest inflation data are especially encouraging when viewed against historical patterns.

Core PCE inflation, which excludes the volatile energy and food categories, also rose to 2.8 percent year over year, from 2.7 percent in the previous month. From October to November, core inflation jumped 0.2 percent.

Minutes from the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting, published on Dec. 17, said CPI inflation was expected to rise temporarily in December 2025 due to higher tobacco duty and stronger airfares inflation.

Inflation in grocery stores has been on the rise in recent months, with a year-over-year increase of 4.7 percent recorded in November.

As for the CPI, the annual inflation rate is expected to hit 2.8 percent. Core CPI inflation is expected to hold steady at 3.1 percent.

The central bank had warned that a sustained lift in underlying inflation could delay interest-rate relief.

Inflation in the UK services sector accelerated to 5 percent from 4.7 percent in June. The Bank of England had expected a headline inflation rate of 3.8 percent for July, but predicted a smaller 4.9 percent increase in services prices.

The latest inflation print likely caused concerns that the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates higher for longer.

On a 12-month basis, headline producer inflation eased to 2.9 percent, higher than the market estimate. Core wholesale inflation also rose to a higher-than-expected 3.6 percent. Consumer inflation has been softening recently.
