There is much disagreement on what happened during those three weeks in Ottawa this winter, when the trucker-led Freedom Convoy blocked the downtown core and thousands of people poured in with Canadian flags and placards.

A trucker driving in that city was released last week without being charged after he drove onto a freeway blocked by thousands of people.

Organizers had stated the funds would be used to pay for the truckers’ expenses such as fuel, food, and shelter.

But a street captain with the truckers rejected the minister's claims outright. David Paisley said, "that sounds like fearmongering and that the government is getting really desperate to discredit us."

The "Freedom Convoy 2022" and “Adopt-a-Trucker” campaigns on GiveSendGo said money raised would go to truckers who travelled to and arrived in Ottawa, paying for fuel, food and shelter.

However, Poilievre may have already placated freedom advocates who backed Baber, having supported the truckers’ convoy and walked with James Topp in the final leg of his march to Ottawa in protest of vaccine mandates.

While appearing before the commission, he defended the OPS’ assessment that the protest would not stretch much beyond the initial weekend.

The Freedom Convoy, which began on Jan. 29 and ended on Feb. 20, started out as a demonstration in Ottawa by truckers opposing federal COVID-19 vaccine mandates for cross-border travel.

It was one of several protests that shut down Canada-U.S. border crossings in solidarity with the larger Freedom Convoy demonstration in downtown Ottawa that opposed the federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers.
