The United States celebrates its 249th Independence Day on July 4, meaning many services across the country are closed in observance of the national holiday.

Government offices, banks, the stock market, and post offices are closed. Elementary schools, high schools, and colleges are closed.

Both the U.S. Postal Service and FedEx will be unavailable during the national holiday, according to their websites. The DMV is also closed.

Some businesses remain open on Independence Day, though they may operate with reduced hours.

Costco warehouses are closed, according to the company’s website. Sam’s Club warehouses are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Plus members and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Club members, the company stated on its website.

Major retailers such as Walmart and Target will remain open, though store hours may vary by location.

Grocery stores such as Food Lion, Kroger, Stop & Shop, and Whole Foods will remain open.

ALDI stores will also be open but on limited operating hours, according to its website.

Trader Joe’s stores are open but will close early at 5 p.m., the company announced on its website.

Pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens will remain open, though some locations may operate on limited hours. Rite Aid will operate at normal hours during the holiday, while Rexall Pharmacy has announced that it will be closed from July 4 and will resume operations on July 7.

IKEA and Home Depot will be operating on Independence Day, though store hours may vary by location. Department stores Macy’s and JCPenney will also remain open during the holiday.

Beauty retailers such as Sephora will remain open, though operating hours may vary by location.

Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for The Auto Club Group, urged people to take precautions when celebrating the national holiday with backyard barbecues, fireworks, and poolside gatherings. Woodland warned of potential safety risks that could arise from such activities.

“While this holiday is a time of celebration, it also brings a spike in home insurance claims related to fires, water accidents, and other hazards,” Woodland said in a June 30 statement. “With so many festivities happening at home, it’s essential that people take proactive steps to protect their property and loved ones.”

The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
