Australia’s Northern Territory has launched its 2026 defence strategy, launched by the Country Liberal Party government at Defence Week in its capital city, Darwin.
The strategic position of northern Australia has long made it a focus for the federal government and the United States, which rotates marines through Darwin.
The document focuses on five priorities: maritime sustainment, the Army’s littoral pivot (focus on shore attack and defence), northern theatre logistics, northern basing and ranges, and innovation, testing. and evaluation.
That would include developing integrated air and missile defence and counter-drone capabilities for RAAF Bases Darwin and Tindal, expanding the pre-positioning of platforms, equipment, fuel, munitions, and spares in strategic locations across the Territory, and basing new Army watercraft, such as medium and heavy landing craft, in Darwin.
The Top End is a significant centre for the defence and maritime industries due to the Territory’s location and infrastructure, which includes initiatives like the Northern Marine Complex at Darwin Harbour, which is being developed into a nationally significant maritime hub.
The strategy was announced at the Northern Australia Defence Summit by Chief Minister and Minister for Defence Lia Finocchiaro.
“The Territory has everything Australia needs to meet the challenges ahead,” she said. “We are the most logical location from which to base, train, project, and sustain forces in the north of Australia.
“Our Northern Marine Complex, one of the most significant economic development projects in the Territory’s history, is being progressed to establish the Top End as a strategic hub for defence and maritime industry,” she said, adding that a strong north secures Australia and the national economy.
Defence is a key pillar of the CLP government’s plan to rebuild the Territory’s economy with the sector contributing about 10 percent of the overall economy and thousands of jobs.
“The Northern Territory isn’t on the edge of Australia’s defence map, we are the frontline,” Finocchiaro said.
