Toronto police are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in a string of robberies, including a shooting and robbery at Fairview Mall.

The suspect, identified as Kyle Douglas Prouse, 53, is allegedly connected to a series of robberies across Ontario and one in Quebec, according to a police news release.

The robberies and break-and-enters date back to 2023, involving at least five jewelry stores—four in Toronto and one in Brossard, Quebec—and two Toronto banks.

In the most recent incident, police responded at 10:05 a.m. on April 21 to reports of a shooting at Fairview Mall.

Police say a male suspect entered a jewelry store at the mall and stole a quantity of merchandise. A member of the mall’s security team then confronted the suspect, during which the security officer was shot. The suspect fled the area in a white van, travelling southbound on Don Mills Road.

The vehicle was later recovered in the area of Shaughnessy Boulevard and George Henry Boulevard. Police say the suspect then fled in a black Honda Accord. The victim was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

“Anyone who is assisting [Prouse], harboring him, or helping him avoid arrest may face criminal charges. This is a serious offence,” Inspector Kristy Smith of the Hold Up Squad said during a news conference.

“If you have information, now is the time to come forward. And to you, Mr. Prouse, directly, the safest and smartest thing you can do is contact a lawyer and turn yourself in to police.”

Smith advised anyone who sees Prouse to not approach him, and to call 911 immediately.

Toronto Crime Stoppers Chair Sean Sportun provided more information on the reward, and said the non-profit community program had increasingly placed a “deliberate and strategic focus” on retail crime in recent years, saying it was not only a retail industry issue, but a public safety concern.

“Citizens remain completely anonymous when they call 416-222-8477 or submit a tip online at 222tips.com,” he said. “Remain confident your identity will be fully protected.”

Addressing Prouse, Sportun said: “With today’s announcement, your world just got smaller.”

Asked by a reporter whether Prouse was likely to still be in Toronto, Smith said: “We have no indication to say that he’s left, or that he has fled.”

The enhanced reward is time-sensitive and will remain in effect until June 30, police said.
