U.S. TV network CBS isn’t too happy at the "Happy Days" lawsuit that has been filed by stars of the show, and is hitting back.
The actors of "Happy Days" had earlier filed a lawsuit against CBS alleging that the company had not paid them for merchandising revenues despite a contract. This week, CBS filed a response to the lawsuit, stating that the claims were simply a "garden-variety breach of contract action" and that the stars of the show were trying to "generate a lucrative litigation windfall by riddling their complaint with unsupported and overreaching causes of action."
"Happy Days" was a popular American TV series that appeared on CBS for 10 years from 1974 to 1984. The lawsuit was filed by Marion Ross, Don Most, Anson Williams, Erin Moran and the estate of Tom Bosley. Bosley passed away in October 2010, so his estate is representing his claims.
All five actors were long-standing cast in the series and were in all eleven seasons of the show, with the exception of Donny "Don" Most, who was not in three of the seasons.
The "Happy Days" series was set in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and revolves around four members of the Cunningham family and their tenant. The show had two animated series that spun-off from the original, as well as a musical in Australia.
In the initial lawsuit, the actors from the "Happy Days" show said that they were owed 2.5% to 5% of total merchandising proceeds, and in addition to CBS, also names Paramount Pictures as a defendant.
