Hedy Epstein, a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor, was arrested during a protest in St. Louis, Missouri over Michael Brown’s death.
Epstein, who grew up in Germany, was eight years old when Adolf Hitler came to power in the country. She escaped to England while her parents died in a concentration camp.
Epstein was arrested on Monday for blocking the entrance to the Wainwright Building, which houses Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s downtown office, in St. Louis, reported freelance journalist Steven Hseih.
Epstein, a prominent activist who advocates for freedom for Gaza, told The Nation: “I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager. I didn’t think I would have to do it when I was 90. We need to stand up today so that people won’t have to do this when they’re 90.”

Epstein is a well-known national and international figure and often speaks about issues on television and radio programs. She was also part of the Nuremberg trials as a witness.
About 125 protesters had gathered in St. Louis, demanding the governor withdraw National Guard troops and calling for a special prosecutor to lead the investigation into Brown’s death.
While police took Epstein away in a bus with other protesters, filmmaker Sabina England said that the officers were “nice” to Epstein.
