French President Nicolas Sarkozy confirmed the death of a French citizen who was abducted by al-Qaeda in Niger in April.
The victim, 78-year-old Michel Germaneau, was a retired engineer and volunteer worker who helped build schools for the nomadic Tuareg people in Sahara. He was kidnapped by al-Qaeda militants in Islamic Maghreb. There has been no information released regarding when or where he was killed.
Sarkozy promised punishment of the murders. “I condemn this barbarous and odious act against this innocent man. This crime will not go unpunished,” said the French president, according to BBC.
Sarkozy said further that French efforts to fight terrorists would not be weakened by the death of Germaneau. He also advised French citizens not to travel to the Sahara region, including parts of Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Algeria.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday also strongly condemned the murder of Germaneau.
