A family vacation at a Florida resort near Walt Disney World took a big turn for the worse.

Mom Christina Streble noticed red bite marks on her daughters and she first thought it was caused by mosquitoes. The family from Kentucky was staying at the Oak Plantation Resort in Kissimmee, Florida just south of Orlando known for being home to a massive Walt Disney World Resort complex.

But then, they pulled back the sheets on the bed.

It turned out the bite marks were caused by bedbugs, which feed off human blood and are considered a big nuisance.

“We counted 266 bites on my oldest daughter and 125 bites on my middle child,” Streble told WKMG. “They were red and inflamed.”

That’s extremely unusual, a doctor said.

“The doctor that saw our daughters said that this was the worst case of bed bugs that he had ever seen,” she told WESH news in Orlando. “This has been a nightmare,” Streble added.

If her story is making your skin crawl, here’s some information about bedbugs, per the Mayo Clinic:

About the size of an apple seed, bedbugs hide in the cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards, bed frames and any other objects around a bed. The risk of encountering bedbugs increases if you spend time in places with high turnovers of nighttime guests — such as hotels, hospitals or homeless shelters.

They hide all over the place:

Bedbug infestations usually occur around or near where people sleep. They hide in the cracks and crevices of:

Mattresses
Box springs
Bed frames
Headboards
Objects or clutter near beds
They can also be found:

Under peeling paint and loose wallpaper
Under carpeting near baseboards
In upholstered furniture seams
Under light switch plates or electrical outlets

And the Clinic says that bedbugs are easily transported from place to place. It adds:

Bedbugs are great hitchhikers. They can move from one site to another by traveling on clothing, luggage, furniture, bedding and boxes.

Bedbugs can crawl about as fast as a ladybug, and can easily travel between floors and rooms in hotels or apartment complexes.

The insects don’t have any problems if their environment is dirty or clean. They just want to suck your blood.
