Chrysler parent Stellantis is recalling 419,035 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a software issue that could lead to a delay in the deployment of the side airbags in a side-impact crash.

According to a recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) X account on May 29, the Jeep Grand Cherokees could have occupant constraint modules with faulty software that inadvertently causes the door airbag pressure sensors to remain active. As a result, the side air bags may not properly deploy if the recall vehicles were struck from the side.

“A faulted door airbag pressure sensor may result in delayed deployment of the [side air bag] in certain types of crashes,” the recall report states.

Drivers who have vehicles with faulty sensors may notice the airbag light is illuminated on their instrument display, and they also may hear a chime sound when the vehicle is started.

Chrysler said the recall affects 140,130 Grand Cherokees model years 2022–2026, and an additional 278,905 Grand Cherokee Ls model years 2023–2025. The sport utility vehicles were manufactured between May 2022 and October 2025.

Stellantis manufactures the Jeep Grand Cherokee at its Detroit Assembly Complex, which includes the Jefferson and Mack plants in Detroit. The $1.6 billion Mack plant came online in 2021 and is the first new auto assembly plant built in the city in three decades. Stellantis also spent $900 million to retool the Jefferson plant so it could produce the automaker’s newest models of the Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler said it first learned of the side airbag sensor issue in February 2023 after its engineering and supplier quality teams discovered multiple warranty claims related to the sensors. Over the next six months, the teams analyzed door airbag sensors that were returned through warranty claims, followed by enhanced problem-solving exercises to determine how the door airbag pressure sensors could be failing.

Ultimately, the company’s technical safety and regulatory compliance organization identified there was a build issue affecting vehicles in the recalled population. Chrysler said it has updated the software for the occupant restraint modules, which should remedy the issue.

Jeep Grand Cherokee owners can bring their vehicles to a licensed dealer to get the software update at no cost. Owners will be notified of the vehicle recall beginning June 11. In the interim, they can input their unique vehicle identification number in the NHTSA’s recall portal to see if their Grand Cherokee is part of the recall effort.

Chrysler’s recall number for this particular issue is 01D. The NHTSA recall number is 26V328.

Earlier in May, Chrysler said it was recalling 61,711 Jeep Cherokees because a failure in the two-speed power transfer unit in affected vehicles could lead to an unintentional rollaway event while the automobiles were parked. The recall population involved Jeep Cherokees made between December of 2018 and February of 2023 (model years 2019–2023).
