Trump’s China Visit Triggered Massive Beijing Security Operation

During U.S. President Donald Trump’s two-day trip to China, Beijing enacted one of its most extensive security operations, closing roads, deploying thousands of police and SWAT officers, and locking down large sections of the capital. More than 2,000 security personnel were mobilized for the visit.

The scale of Beijing’s security operations was significantly greater than for visits from other world leaders, or even in comparison to Trump’s first visit to China in 2017.

And while the extraordinary controls were in place, the scale of Trump’s motorcade and the spectacle surrounding his arrival drew crowds of residents onto Beijing’s streets, where many gathered to film the convoy.

Videos circulating online showed Trump’s convoy traveling on May 14 toward the Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing’s Chaoyang district under heavy police escort. Long stretches of roadway were cleared of civilian traffic as police motorcycles flanked the procession of black vehicles moving through the city.

Footage showed both sides of the roadway blocked off by police, with only Trump’s convoy allowed through.

Several people in Beijing, including insiders close to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) establishment, spoke to The Epoch Times about the security operation on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisal.

Massive Security Deployment

According to an insider from within the CCP, the Chinese regime mobilized more than 2,000 security personnel, including police officers, paramilitary People’s Armed Police units, and members of the elite Central Guard Bureau, the agency responsible for protecting senior CCP leaders.

Security was layered across multiple zones surrounding the Four Seasons Hotel—where Trump was staying—and his expected travel routes, the insider said.

A Beijing taxi driver told The Epoch Times that taxi companies received internal instructions ahead of the visit, urging drivers to remain alert for “unusual behavior” among passengers and to discreetly report concerns through coded messages to dispatchers.

“Beijing’s security level this time is obviously higher than for ordinary foreign leaders,” the taxi driver said. “The area within about one kilometer of the Four Seasons Hotel is under monitoring, and within several hundred meters, there are identity checks for vehicles and pedestrians. We were told not to take passengers into those areas.”

Another insider close to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told The Epoch Times that local authorities across Chaoyang district were mobilized as part of a broader “stability maintenance” operation, a term commonly used in China for domestic security and political control measures.

“The operation this time is huge,” the insider said. “More than 1,000 police officers were deployed just for convoy escort duties, and there are likely over 1,000 armed police as well. Even neighborhood offices were mobilized because authorities were worried someone might try to cause trouble during the visit.”

The insider said the security arrangements followed the same model used during major diplomatic events in China. Armed police guarded Trump’s hotel and event venues, while the Central Guard Bureau handled perimeter protection around the U.S. Secret Service detail.

A worker at a neighborhood committee in Beijing told The Epoch Times that local police had instructed residential communities days earlier to strengthen security measures ahead of Trump’s arrival.

“The police station chief came by and told us Trump was coming and that we needed to strengthen community stability work,” the worker said. “We temporarily hired two extra security guards. The same thing happened during Trump’s previous visit.”

A former employee involved in arranging transportation for foreign dignitaries at Beijing’s Diaoyutai State Guesthouse told The Epoch Times that the security treatment for visiting U.S. presidents exceeds that provided to other world leaders.

“When the U.S. president comes, authorities impose temporary traffic controls along Chang’an Avenue. Once the presidential convoy enters the route, the entire roadway is sealed off, and traffic police are stationed at every intersection,” the former employee said.

Political Security

A retiree from China’s diplomatic corps told The Epoch Times that China has long maintained extremely high-level security measures for senior CCP leaders, particularly during major political or diplomatic events.

“Every year, there are major security operations across China,” Xu said. “The protection measures for Chinese leaders are even stricter than those used for foreign dignitaries. When Xi Jinping travels, snipers are positioned along the route, and in some areas, [people] are not even allowed to open windows.”

He also noted that the United States is among the few countries permitted to bring heavily armed security details into China during presidential visits.

“When Trump comes to China, his security detail can carry automatic weapons,” Xu said. “If China didn’t allow it, the Americans might simply refuse the visit. That’s what a true major power looks like.”

The atmosphere of intense surveillance was also noticed by journalists accompanying Trump.

During a live broadcast from Beijing on May 12, Fox News host Bret Baier remarked on the city’s extensive camera network.

“Our driver parked illegally for two minutes, and he got a message on his phone that he got a ticket for about 40 bucks because they saw it on the camera, but there are real questions as to what the CCP’s goal is about citizens’ tracking and social scoring,” Baier said.
