Cindy Crawford and her family broke their silence for the first time following the death of Presley Gerber at the age of 27.
Crawford, her husband Rande, and their daughter Kaia addressed Gerber’s passing in a joint statement shared on social media on Oct. 18.
“We are beyond heartbroken to lose our beloved son and brother,” read the Instagram post. “We feel so blessed to have had Presley in our lives for 27 years. He is a sweet, beautiful soul who loved and is loved, now and forever.”
“We are so proud of how he showed up in the world, with kindness and vulnerability,” the statement continued. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from so many who know and love our family and even strangers who feel our pain. Til we meet again our sweet boy. We love you forever, Mom, Dad, and Kaia.”
The message marked the family’s first public response since Gerber died on Sept. 20 at a rehabilitation facility in Santa Monica, California.
In a news release issued on Sept. 21, the Santa Monica Police Department said detectives were investigating Gerber’s death as a suspected overdose and that there is currently no indication of foul play.
The department cautioned, however, as it’s in the early stages of its investigation, that the official cause and manner of death had not yet been established and would be determined by the county medical examiner.
The medical examiner’s office said an examination had been conducted, but the cause and manner of death were deferred pending additional testing or studies. The agency said such cases can take months before a final determination is made.
In a separate tribute, Gerber’s sister reflected on their bond shared since childhood and the difficulty of adjusting to a world in which she could no longer reach out to him in the familiar ways siblings often take for granted.
“You know how much I loved being your sister,” she wrote on Instagram. “It has always been, and will forever be, my favorite thing about myself.
“I came into this world with a white-knuckle grip around you. I had more love for you than I knew what to do with. And now that it has nowhere obvious to go, I’m certain it’s going to swallow me whole.
“To say loving you was the easiest thing in the world would imply that it required any effort at all,” she continued. “I was born loving you. I will die loving you. There was never anything else. I am learning how to love you when I cannot see you.”
Born in California in 1999, Gerber was known professionally in the fashion and entertainment industry, following in his famous family’s footsteps. Alongside his sister, the two established successful modeling careers.
Gerber began modeling as a teenager and worked with major fashion brands, including Dolce & Gabbana, Celine, and Calvin Klein.
He made his runway debut in 2016 at Moschino’s Resort show in Los Angeles, and two years later appeared alongside his mother in a Pepsi commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.
In recent years, Gerber had spoken publicly about mental health and substance-use struggles, using social media to launch “Mental Health Mondays,” a series in which he candidly shared his experiences.
