Jake Reiner, the eldest son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Reiner, broke his silence for the first time since the stabbing deaths of his parents, describing the aftermath as a “living nightmare.”

In a personal essay titled “Mom and Dad” released on Substack on April 24, the 34-year-old described the nature of his unexpected loss, giving insight into his family grief and the events that transpired.

“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time,” he wrote. “It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare.

“I can’t even begin to put myself in my parents’ shoes, but one thing I keep coming back to is how frightened they must have been,” he continued. “They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them.

“They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”

The prolific filmmaker and his wife were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, with their younger son, Nick Reiner, 32, who was arrested just hours later and charged for fatally stabbing his parents.

“Every day since then has been horrendous,” Jake Reiner said. “Every meeting we take, every person we talk to, every tear we shed, every movement we make is connected to our parents being murdered.”

“In the middle of trying to process the most devastating moment of your life, the world demands meetings, paperwork, decisions, and explanations; as if documentation must come before mourning.”

Earlier this year, Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders. If convicted, prosecutors say he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 29.

“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake Reiner said. “Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it. It’s almost too impossible to process.”

The couple were married since 1989 and shared sons Jake and Nick, daughter Romy, and Rob’s adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to the late actress Penny Marshall.

“To me, my parents are at the center of my life,” Jake Reiner said. “They are my guiding lights, the foundation of who I am as a human being, and the most giving people I have ever known.

“To fully understand what we lost, my mother was the engine, the backbone, and the heart of our entire family,” he said. “The way my dad presented himself in the public eye was exactly the beautiful person he was at home. … My dad is my hero.”
