Sara Gore, longtime NBC host of New York’s “Open House” and lifestyle program “New York Live,” has revealed live on-air that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The 49-year-old made the announcement during a broadcast of “New York Live” on April 30, telling viewers she will be taking a leave of absence from her duties to focus on treatment and recovery.
“We have shared all kinds of things together on this show over the years,” Gore said in her segment. “But today I want to share something a little more personal, which is hard for me, because you know what, this show has never been about me.”
“It just felt right to tell you myself, I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I’m going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery,” Gore said. “If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying.”
The television personality admitted the news caught her off guard, despite both her mother and sister also being diagnosed with the disease and assuming that the day would come for her as she was high-risk.
“But let me tell you, you are never ready,” she said. “For some reason—even when you catch it early because you’re doing everything right—it is an emotional blow, and I wasn’t ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung.”
Gore went on to express gratitude for her medical team, as well as the support from her family and colleagues, who she described as giving her strength through her diagnosis.
“I’m exactly where I need to be, and I’m surrounded by incredible doctors, and people who are taking such good care of me at home, thank you,” she continued. “At work, thank you, my family here, I love you. I feel loved. I feel very supported.”
While she did not specify the exact treatment she will receiving, common approaches for breast cancer patients include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapy, or immunotherapy, according to The American Cancer Society.
“As hard as this is, I am choosing to believe, at least for me in this moment in time, that maybe there is a gift in this, even if I don’t fully understand what it is yet,” Gore added.
“I’m working on that part. If anything, it’s already a reminder of how precious life is and how important it is to focus on what really matters. I’m going to come back better than ever, and I’m going to see you on the other side of this.”
